Paradise Bay Activities Committee

Minutes of February 12, 2024

Carl Kerr called meeting to order 10:00 a.m.

Prayer was said by Donna Matteson

Pledge of Allegiance was recited

Present: Jim Gath, Carl Kerr, Shana Simison, Karen Rimatzki, Donna Matteson and 22 others

Secretary report:  The minutes of the last meeting were previously emailed.  There were no additions or corrections so the minutes will stand as posted.

Treasury report:  Balance is $11,958.06.  The report will stand as read.

Co-Presidents’ report:  Jim Gath said the Italian Dinner was a huge success and will continue.  There were only 12 people at the Super Bowl Party so next year it will be done differently.  Carl Kerr told us there’s a form to request supplies for any event.  It should be filled out and submitted at least one week prior to the event.

Vice President report: none

Old Business:

  1. Rules: A draft of the revised Rules was emailed and copies distributed. Karen Rimatzki reviewed the proposed changes.  The revised Rules will be voted on at the next meeting.

New Business:

  1. Commercial Slicer: Carl Kerr told us he found out that during the clean-up of the Hall last year, the commercial slicer was donated to the Fire Dept. This was discovered the morning of the Italian Dinner, when it was needed to slice the meat.  Carl Kerr mentioned there are people who are trying to find one that we might purchase to replace it..    

 

Committee Reports:

Ladies Friendship Club: Cathy Mullen-next meeting is February 14th at 1 p.m.   A representative from SOLVE will be speaking about her organization.  That morning, we will assemble flowers in vases and distribute them with cards to 31 people 90 years and older.  The total profit from the Luncheon, Bake Sale, and Gift Basket Raffle was $2,334.

Craft Show: Jean Colson-It was an outstanding Show.  It isn’t a big money maker but we made the most money we ever have.  She presented $395 to the Activities Committee.  She has been in charge for 10 years and is giving up her position.  She is in the process of trying to find a replacement.  If anyone knows of someone interested, please let her know.

Christmas Dinner: Carl Kerr said we still need someone to be in charge.  If anyone would like to do that or knows someone, please notify an Activities Committee Executive Board Member.

Pickleball Club: Melissa Coleman-We have 125 members.  Our first event was a Pizza Party and we made some money from that.  We bought some equipment.  We are going to have a raffle.  The prize is the use of a six-person golf cart for one week with a value of $450.  Raffle tickets are one for $5 or five for $20.  The ticket will be drawn during the Annual Party on February 23rd.  Anyone can join their Team Reach App, the code is SBPC.

Health Fair: Susan Miller-The Blood Drive will be on February 22nd at 9 a.m.-3 p.m., she passed out flyers with information about how to make an appointment.  The Health Fair is from 9-12.   

Boating & Fishing Club:  Chris Matteson-There were about 480 tickets sold for the Frank & Bean Dinner, we made about $2,100.  Elections for officers will be at the next meeting in March.  There are about 220 members.  We got a new kayak trailer that is available to everyone.  At the next meeting, there will be an auction for a fishing trip.  You don’t need to be a Club member to attend a meeting.

Shuffleboard Club: Chris Matteson-just finished our tournament.  February 23rd is Pirate Night.

Bingo: Joyce Nicholson- There has been record crowds this year.  She presented $342 from January’s Cash Awards.  She mentioned they are having an issue with the computer.  She said she’ll find out if it can be fixed or if they will need a new one.

SaraBay: Kathy Ormiston-During their Coffee Hour, they had a Gold Timers Celebration for anyone married 50 years or more.  There were 29 couples.  There will be a Leap Year Dinner on February 29th at 4-6 p.m. for $7. 

Dances: Debbie Greeves-We will be hosting a band for Bayfest.  We added 4 extra events this year. 

Golf:  Jim Gath-meets at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesdays at Pinebrook Ironwood Golf Course.

Comments:  There was some discussion about who can send Email Blasts if Jim Gath is unable to.  It was decided that anyone wanting to send an Email Blast should send an email with the information to Jim Gath.  If he is not able to send the Email Blast at that time, he will forward to someone that is available.

Mary Fox would like to organize a Gold Timers Celebration for Paradise Bay for next year.

Minutes of January 22, 2024

Carl K. called meeting to order 10:00 a.m.

Present: Jim G., Carl K., Shana S., Wendy G., Karen R., Donna M. and 21 others

Secretary report:  The minutes of the last meeting were previously emailed.  There were no additions or corrections so the minutes will stand as posted.

Treasury report:  Balance as January 19th is $10,652.51.  The report will stand as read.

Co-Presidents’ report:  Carl K. stated there was in email blast sent about the Music by the Bay scheduled for Jan. 18th being cancelled.  He’s not aware of when it will be rescheduled but assumes an email blast will be sent out when it is.  Carl thanked Kathy S. for taking care of the flowers on Bayview.  Kathy S. said she has a calendar for the month of March for people to sign up to water for a week from Sunday to Sunday.  Carl mentioned that security is everyone’s business so if you see something that might be wrong, please call.  

Vice President report:  Shana S. thanked the Board for taking care of business in her absence.  She, also, thanked Lee for taking over the Calendar which is a huge job.

Old Business:

  1. Bayfest-There will be an organizational meeting after the next Activities Committee meeting February 12th. Carl K. stated that a sign-up sheet for volunteers will be passed around at the next Coffee Hour.
  2. Frank & Bean Dinner-will be on Saturday, Jan. 27th at 4-6 p.m. They are planning for 500 people and have sold about 400. Tickets can be purchased at the door.
  3. Christmas Dinner-looking for a new Chairperson. If anyone is interested, please contact an Activities Committee Executive Board member.

New Business:

  1. Memorial Service is on Sunday, January 28th at 6 p.m. at the Paradise Bay Rec Hall.
  2. Flowers on Valentine’s Day-Ladies Friendship Club will deliver to anyone 90 years old or older.

Committee Reports:

Ladies Friendship Club: Cathy M.-next meeting is February 14th at 1 p.m.  Our membership has increased by 12-14, this year.  All ladies are invited to join.  Our Luncheon, Bake Sale, and Gift Basket Raffle will be on Feb. 3rd.  She said they need items for the Bake Sale and desserts for the Luncheon which can be brought to the Paradise Bay Rec Hall on Fri., Feb. 2nd from 8 a.m-2 p.m. and Sat., Feb. 3 from 8-10:30 a.m.  The meal includes a pulled pork or chicken salad sandwich, chips, a drink and a dessert for $7.50.  We pass out Welcome Bags to new shareholders for the Activities Committee.  She told us they would like to put a pen, key chain, and/or a coffee mug in the Welcome Bag.  She did get some prices for those items.  She said that it would cost approximately $300 to place an order.  Cathy M. made a motion to buy pens and coffee mugs for the Welcome Bags not to exceed $350.  It was seconded by Donna M.  It passed unanimously.  It was, also, mentioned they are in need of items for the Gift Basket Raffle, especially ones that men would like.  They can be brought to Donna M. or Cathy M.

Boating & Fishing Club:  Chris M. told us “Fast Eddy” will be playing music during the Frank & Bean Dinner on January 27th.  Kim Hopkins and her sisters will be doing the dinner.  Boat inspections on Jan. 27th.  At their next meeting, they will have their new t-shirts.  Also, they will be auctioning off a boat trip.  They will be selling the new t-shirts for $25 at the Frank & Bean Dinner.

Shuffleboard Club: Chris M.-Shuffle Under the Stars has been very well attended.  The Amateur tournament will be on Monday, January 29th; sign up begins at 8 a.m.

Entertainment: Tom B.-On Wednesday, the committee will be going to preview shows for next year.

Bocce Club:  Tom B.-Despite the cold weather, it’s still going good.

Historical Committee:  Brenda O.-She read information about the Committee which will be in Newsletter.  She is looking for some people to take over.  She, also, read some information about the history of our Park.  There are copies of the History of our Park in the office.

Dance:  The Committee will be donating $900 to pay for Soul R Coaster playing the night of Bayfest from 5-8 p.m. so attendance is free.  The 88 Live food truck and Purple Bell Ice Cream truck will be serving.

Golf League:  Jim G.-Pinebrook Ironwood Golf Course, arrive at 11:30 a.m. to be put on a foursome.

SaraBay: Kathy O.-Memorial Service will be on February 19th. 

Comments:  John & Marla Rigby said they would like to start a “Souper Bowl” collection of cans and nonperishable foods for a local food pantry.  They will have containers at Paradise Bay, Sarasota Bay Rec Halls and their place at 16 H St. starting February 3rd until the Super Bowl.

Paradise Bay Activities Committee

Minutes of January 8, 2024

Carl K. called meeting to order 10:00 a.m.

Prayer was said by Carl K.

Pledge of Allegiance was recited

Present: Jim G., Carl K., Wendy G., and Karen R. and 19 others

Christmas Dinner:  Ken gave the Activities Committee $90 from the ham sales.  He told us that he would no longer be in charge of the Christmas Dinner but if possible would help.  He handed over all the paperwork.  Carl K. said he would ask members of the Bocce Club if they would like to be in charge of the Christmas Dinner.

Secretary report:  The minutes of the last meeting were previously emailed.  There were no additions or corrections so the minutes will stand as posted.

Treasury report:  Balance is approximately $9,000.

Co-Presidents’ report:  Carl K. informed us that the Activities Committee purchased a label maker to be used to label any cabinets, drawers, etc. that contain supplies and materials.  There are some empty cabinets in the Hall.  If anyone needs a place to store their items, please let us know.

Vice President report:  none

Old Business: none

New Business:

1.Bayfest-Saturday, March 2, 2024-George M. is still willing to be in charge of the games.  They will be held in the Annex.  Carl K. will be in charge of the food with the help of the Pickleball Club.  Jim G. will be in charge of the Parade and Golf Cart Rodeo.  Wendy G. will take care of the raffles.  Jim G., Carl K. and Barbara G. have solicited gifts for the raffles from local businesses.  The theme this year is Tropical.  Jim G. said there should be an email blast to notify everyone about the theme.  Carl K. said we will discuss and assign responsibilities at our next meeting and make a sign up sheet for volunteers to be passed out at the Coffee Hour. 

2.Italian Dinner-Saturday, February 10, 2024-John Mattei is in charge.

3.Use of Park Facilities-There was a lot of discussion about anyone being able to reserve or use any of the Park facilities if it was available.  Carl K. made a motion that any shareholder who wants to have an event in any of the facilities that is not occupied on the calendar by some previous activity is allowed to reserve that time slot in their name.  It was seconded by Cathy.  It passed with a majority vote with 3 opposed.  Peggy made a motion to rescind the previous motion.  It was seconded by Joyce F.  It passed unanimously.  It was decided that this issue should be referred to the Board of Directors.  David B. told us he would like to use the Helm’s House on Thursday, January 11th from 4-6 p.m for a Fantasy Football Draft with 20 people.  Without any objection, Carl K. told Lee to put it on the Calendar. 

Committee Reports:

Euchre:  Mary F. said she heard that SaraBay will be changing their Euchre to be on Monday which is the same night as she has it.  If that happens, there wouldn’t be enough people because several of them are from SaraBay.  Carl K. said he would talk with someone at SaraBay to find out what is happening and get back with Mary.

Boating & Fishing Club:  George M.- Frank & Bean Dinner on Sat., Jan. 27 at 4-6 p.m. the tickets are $8 or 2 for $15.  Boat inspections on Jan. 27th at 8 a.m. by the docks by the U.S. Coast Guard.  During the Coffee Hour on Monday, January 15th, we will be auctioning off a boat trip on Jim G.’s pontoon.  The Park has donated a used kayak trailer.  They need some supplies to fix it up and were wondering if the Activities Committee would pay for them.  They will present the requested amount at the next meeting for an approval. 

Dances: Debbie G.-This Saturday at 4-6 p.m, the Philly Cheesesteak food truck will be by the Shuffleboard courts before the Sweet Fleet Dance.

Ladies Friendship Club: Cathy M.-our monthly meeting is this Wednesday, January 10th.  Members and guests will be donating items for a “baby shower” for SOLVE Maternity Homes.  Cathy mentioned some of the requested items.  We will be distributing flowers on Valentine’s Day to anyone 90 years or older.  On Saturday, February 3rd we will have a luncheon, bake sale and Gift Basket raffle during the Craft show.

Bingo: Joyce N. presented a check for $229 from Cash Awards to the Activities Committee.  Bingo has been going great with bigger crowds then in the past 2-3 years.

Historical Committee:  Brenda O.-She is looking for some people to take over.

Pancake Breakfast: Lynn J.- Due to the increase in the cost of food and supplies, they are raising the price to $4.00, this year.  SaraBay will be charging the same amount, too.

Luminaires: Anita C.- She thanked everyone for their help on Christmas Eve. Brenda O. made a motion to purchase 200 tall candles. It was seconded by Lynn J. It passed unanimously.

Bible Study: Dan S.- He will not be able to do the Bible Study anymore.  There are other Bible Studies taking place in the Sarasota Bay Rec Hall.

Waterfront Worship: Dan S.- He will continue doing it on Sundays.

Golf League:  Jim G.-they meet at Pinebrook Ironwood on Tuesdays at 11:30 a.m. and tee off about noon.

Comments:  Bill Nicholson, as a representative of the Board of Directors, thanked everyone for their hard work in making a great environment for our Park.  He, also, said the Board recommends everyone vote yes to waive the Reserves.

Mary F. knows someone who would like to attend some type of computer/tablet class.  Mary said she would ask someone who might be interested in instructing a class.

PARIDISE BAY ACTIVITIES COMMITTEE

MINUTES OF DECEMBER 11, 2023

Carl K. called meeting to order 10:00 a.m.

Present: Jim G., Carl K., Wendy G., and Donna M. and 19 others

Secretary report:  Motion made by Chris M. and seconded by Tom B. to approve last meeting minutes without change.

Treasury report:  Balance on hand is $11,140.00.

Co-Presidents report:  Carl brought up Coffee Hour servers, Wendy had signs and gave to clubs and one schedule is now posted in the kitchen.

OPEN HOUSE & Christmas Karaoke on Dec. 22 @ 6:30. Bring cookies to share and enjoy ALL your favorite Christmas Carols.

1st time SUPER BOWL PARTY at Helms House Feb. 11th.  New big screen TV to watch the game.  Bring finger food and drinks for fellowship and fun!

REORGANIZING: Supplies, decorations, etc. may have new homes. Carl will be relabeling cabinets, shelves, and hooks on all storage areas to help with waste and save time searching for things. He will make a master list and have it available.  A BIG thank you to all who helped in the clean-up of the storage areas.

Committee Reports:

   Boating/Fishing: ATTENTION ALL KAYAKERS, if interested, let our Board members know you would like the kayak launch project to go forward. There is also a need for a trailer to carry the kayaks to the water, the Club is working on this plan, also.  

   Shuffleboard: Had a great turnout for Shuffle Under The Stars, 8 of 10 courts filled and new people are always welcome to join our fun shuffle.

   Bocce: A meeting is scheduled for Jan. 2.  All current and new teams please attend this information meeting.  Regular season to start Jan. 10th.

Tom informed a price increase for hot dog sales, now $3.00 for a hot dog.

   Craft Show: Show was well attended and had 19 vendors. After expenses, profit of $375 (most ever) was given to Activities Board.  Thank you to Jean and helpers.

   Library:  Barb was requesting new shelves for more books. A suggestion to give $500 for library books and supplies, motioned by Tom and 2nd by Darnell was passed.

   Karaoke: An addition to the singing, this year, there will be a 50/50 drawing and prizes!

Please note; for CARD PLAYERS, on the 11th, Entertainment will be using the annex. Cards that night could possibly be scheduled for the Helms House.

   Pool:  Jean will be requesting money for supplies such as noodles and weights.

   Luminaries:  Let’s light up the park streets!  Residents get involved in the tradition of putting luminaries in driveways on Christmas Eve, some supplies are in the office. If neighbors are gone or unable to do this, put luminaries out for them.  Tis the season!

   Historical Committee:  Always looking for people to help, this is a good way to learn the history of PARADISE!

   Ladies Friendship Club:  Ladies luncheon this Wed.  Ladies new to the park are welcome to attend, come and see what the club is all about. Many activities to explore.

   Bingo:  Just getting started but will need more tables set up soon. Anyone interested in calling Bingo notify Joyce or Joyce.

Comments/Questions:

Bulletin board needs to have heading changed to include SaraBay. Darnell offered to make the change. Thank you.

Kathy O.:  New Year tickets for dance at Sara Bay are still available. Sara Bay, New Years Eve from 4-6 p.m. will have hot dogs and salad outside on sale for $5.00.

Saturday, Jan.20th from 1-2 p.m. at Sara Bay there will be a DANCE DEMO. This is for a show of interest to learn different dances available for lessons. Sounds like fun!

Paradise Bay Activities Committee

Minutes of November 27, 2023 Meeting

The meeting was called to order by Carl K. at 10:00 a.m.

Prayer was said by Sarah Kohler

Pledge of Allegiance was recited.

Present were: Jim G., Co-President, Carl K., Co-President and 12 members.

Secretary’s Report:  The minutes of the last meeting were previously emailed.  There were no additions or corrections so the minutes will stand as posted.

Treasurer’s Report:  Our balance is approximately $12,000.  The report will stand as read. 

Co-President’s Report:  Jim G. said that Randy D. talked to him about possibly purchasing a game cabinet that has 7 or 8 games that could be used in the Helm’s House.  Several people thought it was a good idea.           

Vice President’s report:  none

Old Business

  1. Florida Power & Light speaker at Coffee Hour-Jim G. said he got an email from someone from FP & L about having a Customer Appreciation Day. He has tried to contact the sender but no reply. If he isn’t able to speak with the person who sent the email, he will contact FP & L.

New Business

  1. Super Bowl Game-in the Helm’s House. Jim G. said Randy D. is planning to buy a TV for the Helm’s House. The Super Bowl Game event is already scheduled on the Calendar.  Carl K. will make sign up sheets and have them available at the Coffee Hours at both Rec Halls.

Committee reports/update

Kitchen Supplies-Sue Cassidy-She would like at least a one week notice from anyone who needs supplies for their event.  Also, it would be helpful for the person in charge to keep a list of the items that are used as a record for future years.  Jim G. said he would meet with Sue C. in order to develop a group email informing everyone of this information.

Newsletter-Joyce Nicholson-It’s becoming difficult to do the Newsletter because she isn’t getting the information in a form that can just be put directly in the Newsletter.  She would like the information in the form of an article that could just be put directly into the Newsletter.  Also, it should be submitted by the dead line and just for the next month not 2 or 3 months in advance.

Boating & Fishing Club-Kevin Sullivan-He informed us that there are approximately 100 people in the Kayaking Group.  They need a safe place to launch their kayaks.  Therefore, they are in the process of planning to have a launch and dock made.  They, also, need an easier way to transport the kayaks to the water.  They would like to buy a kayak trailer that would cost approximately $4,500.  They are going to request funds from the Park, the Boating & Fishing Club would contribute funds and they will be requesting funds from the Activities Committee.  Carl K. told him that the Executive Board would discuss that at their next meeting.

Luminaries-Anita Cook-She would like people to use the same type of containers on their street so it looks uniform.  Also, she told us about several different items that could be purchased at Dollar Tree or Amazon.

Travelog-Sarah Kohler-There will be one on Sunday, December 3rd at 6:30 p.m. about Cambodia and one on Sunday, December 17th at 6:30 p.m. about the United States.

New Year’s Eve Dance-Sarah Kohler-Tickets will go on sale at the next Coffee Hour at Sarabay on Monday, December 4th at 9:00 a.m. for $15.  There will be a total of 100 tickets available.

Thanksgiving Dinner-Chris Matteson-Thanked everyone for all their help.

Travel-Rita Foley-The trip to Broadway Palm Theatre to see the Elvis Show on January 4th has been canceled due to lack of participation and change of Broadway Palm Theatre’s policy.

Historical Committee-Brenda Ocenasek-She would like pictures or memorabilia of all the Activities.  There are items in the display case without any information on them.  If anyone knows the dates, names, etc., please let her know.

Blood Mobile-Susan Miller-The Blood Mobile will be here on Saturday, December 2nd.  If you are able to give blood, please sign up.  There is a shortage of blood in the U.S., now.

Craft Show-Jean Colson-It will be this Saturday, December 2nd.  There will be a lot of new vendors.  The Hall will be closed on Friday for set up.

Carl K. adjourned the meeting at 11 a.m.
