March 5th 2024
Paradise Bay Sarasota Bay Boating & Fishing Club Meeting Minutes
President: Ron Prieskorn
Vice President: Chris Matteson
Treasurer: Kevin Sullivan
Secretary: George Mullen
The meeting was called to order at 9:00am by President Ron Prieskorn. There were 96 members present.
Ron Led the club in the Pledge of Allegiance and then recited the Fisherman's Prayer.
Ron then asked for a motion to accept the minutes from the February 6th meeting. The minutes were accepted and approved by the attendees.
Chris Matteson spoke about the Fish luncheon on March 22nd and explained that members of the club would enjoy the fish luncheon for free. Chris then spoke about our chairs for the club and the fact that nothing gets done without the participation of the club members, and thanked everyone that has helped in the past.
Dan Wilder spoke about our boating trip to Egmont key on April 29th. There were 11 boats and about 40 people that went. Dan then said he is planning a trip in the next couple weeks to Casey Key, it is south past Sarasota, date will be posted on Teamreach depending on weather. Then in April Dan is planning a trip to Gilligan's island, that was a fun time last year.
Ron then explained how to use the Teamreach app and showed everyone how to use it.
Kevin Sullivan gave an update on club shirts and hats, and information pertinent to the Kayak launch. Kevin asked for a motion to spend up to $2000 for next year's shirts and to spend up to $1000 for next year's hats. A motion was made by George Mullen and seconded by Chris Matteson, motion was approved by present club members.
Kevin then asked for a motion to donate $500 to the activities committee and $300 to Sara Bay activities committee. Motion was made by Ron Preiskorn and seconded by Ken Huizinga. Club members approved the motion.
Kevin then gave the financial report and Ron asked for a motion to accept. Motion was made by Ron Prieskorn seconded by Ricky Baer. Club membership approved the financial report.
Sheila Gilstrap announced that Snook between 28” and 33” can be kept now. Sheila then explained how to use the web site myfwc.org. Sheila also talked about another good resource for fishing information, takemefishing.org. Sheila then reviewed the correct way to message a fish
Dave Brown thanked Mike Dunn for his work organizing several recent kayak trips. Dave talked about another excursion coming up called illuminated night kayaking. More information on dates and times can be seen on Teamreach. Dave then thanked the Club board members for the help with the kayak launch. Dave also announced that Sara Bay would be making a donation to the boating and fishing club to go towards the kayak launch expenses. Dave told the members that after our meeting the kayakers would have a kayak launch meeting.
Ron Preiskorn made a motion to donate $150 dollars to the kayakers for sandwiches delivered to the sandbar by boat. The motion was second by Phillip Baugh and was approved by the membership.
Stan Helenbrand spoke about details for the 3 day fishing contest this week.
Ron Prieskorn announced the winners for the women's fishing contest, the one day fishing contest and the February monthly fishing contest.
Dock Report, Scotty Yates was not present so Ron gave the report. Ron talked about the beautification of our waterfront area and thanked our maintenance staff and volunteers for new grass, poles and ropes. Ron said Scotty wanted to thank all the volunteers that have made repairs after our storms and explained to be patient while water and electric repairs continue on the docks. Be safe out on the water and he will see you out there.
Chris Matteson conducted the election of the club board officers. Chris announced that Ron Prieskorn, President, Kevin Sullivan, Treasure, and George Mullen, Secretary, would run for another term. A membership vote was conducted and all three positions were approved by present membership. Chris announced he would not be running for his position of Vice President and nominated John Hopkins. There was a vote by show of hands for John Hopkins and the present membership approved John overwhelmingly.
John Hopkins then spoke a little about himself and thanked the membership for their vote.
Kevin then spoke about all the things Chris Matteson had done to improve our club during his 4 year term of Vice President. We will all miss Chris and appreciate his many contributions for our club.
Sheila Gilstarp asked for a new business item, to increase the size of the blacktop pad in the boat yard. To help with the congestion on the current pad for boaters working on their boats. After a little conversation the board agreed to get some information about how to go about getting the pad size increased.
Ricky Baer conducted our Auction. He auctioned off a few smaller items that had been donated and then an offshore fishing trip with Steve Lucus. The auction was for two people to go out with Steve Lucus offshore. Steve is an avid offshore fisherman who knows where the fish are. The auction was very exciting with a few of the ladies getting in on the bidding and the ladies were there right to the end, But Dave Whalley finally won out with his bid of $600 dollars. Congratulations Dave, we know you will have a great experience with Steve.
We then had our 50/50 drawing for $118 dollars, Cathy Mullen was the winner, it was the first time I bought tickets for the drawing. I will be buying them at each meeting now.
Meeting was Adjourned by Ron Prieskorn
Respectfully Submitted by George Mullen
